Alex LaPlante is the Head of Risk and Commercial Banking at Borealis AI. In this role, Dr. LaPlante leads Borealis’ efforts to develop and implement artificial intelligence solutions to improve efficiency and flexibility across these lines of business. Dr. LaPlante also writes and speaks in a variety of forums about her current research interests, which include applications of AI and machine learning to finance and issues surrounding the ethical application of AI.
Before joining Borealis AI, Dr. LaPlante was the Managing Director of Research at the Global Risk Institute. Dr. LaPlante led GRI’s internal and external research initiatives, including the National Pension Hub for Pension Knowledge and Research, set the strategic direction for GRI’s research programs, and conducted her own research on applications of Fintech and AI in financial services. Prior to her tenure at GRI, Dr. LaPlante was Director of Enterprise Analytics at CIBC, where she led a range of data analytics projects in treasury, capital markets, and client insights.
Dr. LaPlante holds MASc and PhD degrees in operations research from the University of Toronto, where she studied operational efficiency and growth potential of bank branch networks, and a BASc in mechanical engineering from the University of Windsor. She also holds a Certificate in Quantitative Financial Risk Management from the University of Waterloo.
