The world’s top computer vision event is coming to Canada. And Borealis AI is all in.

For the first time ever, the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) is being held in Canada. Thousands of the world’s leading computer scientists, engineers, researchers, academia and business leaders will come together in Vancouver from June 18th to 22nd. Borealis AI will be there to participate – and to help foster the growth of Canada’s AI ecosystem and talent.

CVPR is a big deal for AI and Machine Learning researchers. In fact, it’s the foremost computer vision event of the year. It is where the latest cutting-edge research and innovation in computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, robotics and artificial intelligence are presented and debated. This year’s conference will include the main conference and several co-located workshops and tutorials.

We are leaders in our field

As one of Canada’s leading AI research institutes, Borealis AI is proud to be deeply involved in CVPR 2023. One focus for Borealis’ research is the ATOM project, which examines machine learning models for asynchronous time series data, the type often found in transaction sequences and other applications. Borealis AI former research intern Kiarash Mohammadi and researchers He Zhao, Mengyao Zhai and Fred Tung will be presenting a paper on imbalanced learning based on our ATOM research. ATOM will also be the focus of a workshop paper on dynamic neural nets for multitask learning by Elahe Rahimian, Golara Javadi, Fred Tung, and Gabriel Oliveira, accepted to Efficient Deep Learning for Computer Vision workshop.

Additionally, He Zhao will also be participating in the Workshop on Learning with Limited Labelled Data for Image and Video Understanding on Day two as part of the organizing committee. At this workshop, Borealis AI’s Academic Advisor, Graham Taylor, will be giving a keynote on Machine Learning for Biodiversity.

With this year’s event in our own backyard, Borealis AI is also taking a lead role in helping organize the conference. Greg Mori, Senior Research Director at Borealis AI, is an Organizing Committee General Chair, and Thibault Durand, Senior Machine Learning Researcher, is serving as a CVPR 2023 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Chair. We’re also sponsoring a Workshop on Learning with Limited Labelled Data for Image and Video Understanding with a best-paper prize.

Having world-leading computer vision and artificial intelligence experts together in Vancouver gives us a unique opportunity to really showcase Canada’s leadership in the field and to showcase the value of AI to Canadians. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we help build up the AI community and help guide its future direction,

We are building the ecosystem

The CVPR 2023 conference isn’t just an opportunity to talk about our research and advance the field. It’s also an opportunity to help encourage, grow and diversify Canada’s AI and ML ecosystem.

We are key contributors to two CVPR 2023 social events. Alongside Carnegie Melon University and Princeton University, Borealis AI is hosting a CVPR 2023 Social Event focused on Diversity and Inclusion in AI. There will be talks, networking and booth sessions where Borealis AI will showcase our successful undergrad Let’s SOLVE it mentorship program. To learn more about Let’s SOLVE it click Let’s Solve It. We’ve also partnered with a number of organizations to support the Black in AI Social; an event focused on community-driven research in Africa and networking for Black in AI researchers.

“Conferences like CVPR 2023 allow us to come together as a community to talk about issues like diversity and inclusion, to listen to and share experiences and to identify potential solutions. We’re proud to support these venues. And we look forward to engaging with the community on these important topics at CVPR 2023,” added Eirene Seiradaki, Director of Partnerships, Borealis AI.

We are making valuable connections

Throughout the event, Borealis AI will be in the middle of the mix with an engaging booth on the main conference exhibition floor, staffed by some of our top researchers, recruiters, partnership leaders and executives. We will be talking about our research, sharing our successes, showcasing career opportunities and building the Borealis AI and RBC brand.
